Myofunctional Orthodontics for Adults
Many of us have had braces, but our teeth seemed to have crowded up again. Most of us do not want braces again and are concerned that they will not solve the problem.
For several years MRC Clinics have treated the causes of crooked teeth in children, often without the need for braces. Due to the increasing demand for adult orthodontics, MRC Clinics Upper Coomera has now opened a new and exclusive Adult Orthodontic and TMJ (jaw joint) treatment section as a separate wing of the clinic.
There are some big advantages of MRC Clinics’ myofunctional orthodontic system over the currently available alternatives for adults. While MRC Clinics Upper Coomera does offer both braces and Invisalign treatment, we also provide a ‘no braces’ alternative, the MYOBRACE® system.
The MYOBRACE® system for adults is virtually invisible, with the MYOBRACE® being used only for 2 hours daily plus overnight, unlike other systems which require permanent use. The MYOBRACE® system for adults works to correct the poor oral habits (known as poor myofunctional habits) that cause crooked teeth to create a stable environment for improved dental alignment.
The limitations of adult myofunctional orthodontics
Research shows that after about 15 years of age, when all permanent teeth are present and the jaws have stopped growing, the bone around the teeth is harder. Dental work on older patient’s teeth will make them more prone to damage from orthodontic appliances. All of these factors can contribute to less stable results than for children’s treatment, and likely long term or permanent retainers being required if poor oral habits are not been corrected. Not everyone is a suitable patient.
Levels of treatment
There are varying levels of treatment available dependent on your desired treatment outcomes. Treatment costs are comparable to braces, but vary depending on individual patient requirements. Basic treatment starts from around $2000.
What you need to consider before saying YES to treatment.
Many of you have seen the MRC Clinics treatment work like magic for children. A child’s teeth, face and health are all improved within months of treatment commencing. This is because removing bad myofunctional habits from the growing child allows them to grow to their potential. Adults are different and treatment progress is monitored closely throughout treatment. Teeth can become hypersensitive, the bite can be altered unfavorably and old jaw joint problems can resurface. All this will be discussed before treatment and every effort will be made to avoid unwanted problems. If problems do occur, a change to the treatment plan is likely to occur, or a discontinuation of treatment. Each patient has individual requirements and expectations which can change throughout treatment. MRC Clinics recognises this and takes a flexible approach to treatment for Adults, particularly those who have had braces previously.
How to get started
MRC Clinics offers an evaluation and diagnostic consultation visit from $120. At this appointment you will be given some basic treatment options, plus an initial evaluation of your myofunctional orthodontic requirements. Additional charges are involved in obtaining models of your teeth and other records.
